Common Questions

How can the Disability Support Center help me?
Information and referral regarding disability supports is available to all community members.  If you are an individual with a developmental disability or have a family member with a developmental delay, you may choose to have a one to one service navigator assist you with accessing the supports you need.

What is a Developmental Delay?
A developmental delay is when you or your love one has trouble with three or more major life activities.  Activities such as taking care of your personal needs, understanding and expressing language, learning, mobility, being able to independently live and earn money are the areas of development that we consider.  We also look at if this trouble started before you turned 22 years old and if it will last your whole life.

How can a Service Navigator help me?
A Service Navigator is available to help you become aware of supports or community activities that you might be interested in receiving.  The Service Navigator helps you organize your needs by developing an individual and/or family plan.  Once the plan is completed, as partners, you and the Service Navigator work towards accomplishing the goals you set.

How long can you help me?
Since every individual and family is unique, it will depend on the type of supports that you are requesting.  Generally, this usually takes around 4 to 6 months.

Can I receive help with my rent, food, or clothing?
Unfortunately, the Disability Support Center for families is not able to give you money to help you with food, clothing or shelter.  Our goal is to help you find the organization that can provide you with these necessities.  We also want to teach you how to find supports so that in the future, you are able to find what you need or desire.

Can you help me or my family to get a loan?
We are not a bank or lender and so cannot offer financial services. If you are a current or former member of the military, however, it is possible that P2P Military Loans members may make you a personal military loan.

How can I find out about trainings and community activities?
Phone calls are always welcomed, but the best place to look for the most up-to-date information is on the home page of this Web site.
